Black sun ring silver jewelry, made of 925 silver
Order number: 51.014.13The "magical" (black) sun is first attested in the Akkadian-Old Babylonian area (Sargon I., Naram-Sin). As a BAB-CHOME, the invisible "dark sun" is considered to be the source of power on this side of the supreme deity "ILU", directly connected to the god power acting from the afterlife, which - in part - is derived from the gods and goddesses, especially Anu, Enlil, Ea, Ischtar and Marduk can be shared. The close relationship between this world of gods and that of the Edda has been proven, albeit so far without a definitive, secure explanation for this Mesapotamian-Germanic common ground.
One of the best-known and most beautiful representations of the "Black Sun", which is set next to the "Sun of the Day", is found on the large Naram Sin stele kept in the Louvre in Paris. The myth of the "Black Sun" spread from southern Babylonia to Assyria, Persia, Phoenicia, Carthage and Egypt. Emperor Frederick II brought an Assyrian amulet with the "Black Sun" to Europe; and this is their first tangible appearance in Europe (which, however, says nothing about whether the "Black Sun" belief may not have been at home with us in earlier Germanic times, see Mesopotamian-Germanic community).
