In the Germanic tribes, the horse was sacred. The “horse cult”, especially with regard to white horses, led to careful and pure breeding among the Germanic tribes.
The complete herd counted twelve mares and one stallion, which were kept in sacred “temple forests”. This cult gave a particularly select strain of unmixed and pure horses. The 13 horses count to the number of moons, according to the Germanic calendar.
