CD Viking Sounds - I had a dream
The oldest musical recordings in Denmark—a melody fragment in runic script with the text: "Drømte mit en drom i nat om silke og ærlig pæel. ... in English: "I dreamt a dream last night of silk and precious cloth!" The discovery of these melodies prompted a revival of performances using historical instruments. These included: 3-hole and 6-hole bone flutes, chamois horn, Falster pipe, Oseberg lur, Västerby horn, drum, lyre, pan flute, horn whistle, and others. A small accompanying booklet provides a detailed description of the origins of the melodies and the musical instruments used at the time. Special attention was paid to the reconstruction of the discovered melodies and the replicas of the historical instruments in the performance. A total of 12 different melodies are played, some of which are sung. The songs and melodies date from the 10th to 12th centuries.
The music of the Vikings has not been passed down to us. However, some musical instruments from this period have been found during archaeological excavations. The Danish musicians Erik Axel Wessberg, Mogens Friis, and Knud Albert Jepsen have attempted to revive this music using very old, traditional melodies played on reconstructed instruments.
