Medieval salt-glazed stoneware, handcrafted using traditional methods.

Salt firing is an ancient craft that originated in the 13th/14th century. After a firing process lasting several days, the salt-glazed clay is produced at a firing temperature between 1300 °C and 1350 °C. Salt is sprinkled into the kiln's firing chamber through various openings (side and top flue holes). The salt crystals immediately vaporize due to the intense heat. The resulting vapor combines with the glowing black-red clay to form a silicate, creating the so-called salt-glazed clay.

The finished fired stoneware has a satin to high-gloss surface - depending on its location in the kiln.

The salt-fired firing process is very labor-intensive and therefore more expensive than other ceramic or stoneware.

The production process requires a great deal of experience and skill. Today, very few potteries still use the traditional salt-glazing technique.
Salt-glazed stoneware is non-toxic, dishwasher- and oven-safe , and resistant to acids and alkalis. It is completely waterproof and distinguished by its extreme surface hardness.
Each salt-glazed stoneware piece is a unique work of traditional German craftsmanship, and for this reason has a particularly high value.
