Upright drinking cups spread throughout Europe from the 5th century onwards, and were thus also used by the Vikings, Germanic tribes, and Franks! These glasses were handmade. The upright drinking cups are a light green, the natural color of forest glass. In the 5th century, the possibility of producing white glass was not yet known. In the Middle Ages, these drinking vessels were particularly popular with princes and at certain bourgeois tables, as they were used to prevent the risk of poisoning the beverage. Also, in the Middle Ages, there were no metal stands like the ones pictured here; the upright drinking cup had to be emptied in one go and then turned upside down on the table, thus reducing the risk of poisoning. From the 9th century onwards, the glasses were also richly decorated, sometimes in different colors.
Even wealthy Germanic tribes and Vikings could afford such a glass. Ordinary farmers and fishermen had ceramic vessels or drinking horns.

The drinking cups are approximately 17 cm high and come with a matching forged metal stand. They hold about 0.31 liters of beverage.
