Among the Germanic peoples, Odin occasionally appeared in the form of a bear. Wildness lived in the bear's fur, in the berserkers themselves – in the berserker rage of the Germanic tribes and Vikings!

The term berserker (berserkr), meaning "bear-skinner," comes from the Old West Norse "sekr," meaning cloak, and "ber," meaning bear. Wrapped in bearskin and aided by certain "psychoactive plants," Odin's "warriors" would fly into a berserker rage during battle, believing themselves to be bears in the unleashed power. The bear is considered a power animal in many mythologies.
