Viking spearhead / winged spearhead
The Viking spear was used more frequently than the sword because it was much cheaper to produce. The wings, of Frankish origin, limited the weapon's penetration and ensured effective parrying. This decorative spearhead demonstrates the Vikings' creative blend of art and warfare. The so-called niello effect is clearly visible on this spearhead. This involved using an alloy of several metals and sulfur, which was rubbed into the incised surface and then fired. Where the alloy was rubbed into the engraving, it remained black, while the rest of the surface was polished to a high shine. Although this decorative spearhead was produced using more modern techniques, it still exhibits a glossy, lasting niello-like effect.
