Cailleach, the Celtic goddess and witch of storms and winter

Cailleach, the Celtic goddess and witch of storms and winter

The primordial Celtic goddess Cailleach is a storm and winter witch.
She can appear as a young maiden, but can also transform into a veiled old crone.
Life and death are often closely intertwined. She killed plants, yet protected their seeds for new life. Through the witch Cailleach, we can come to understand that death is not something final, but also stands for the beginning of new life.
She brings us the wind, storms, snow, and ice. Her face and her being embody death, yet within her slumbers new life.

In some myths, Cailleach is associated with the trinities, such as the three Norns at the Urd well of the world tree Yggdrasil.
In ancient myths, she plucks down or goose feathers and lets them fall to the earth as snow. She rewards those who work long and hard, while despising and punishing the lazy.

She is accompanied by a wolf, upon which she also rides through the air, bringing snow and ice to strike down all life. On the ground, frost spreads into every last crack when she touches it with her magic wand.
She is particularly fearsome to those who fear death. All those who understand the cycle of life and are at peace with themselves and life do not fear Cailleach, but regard her as a "friend," for death is a part of life and represents a new beginning.
