The Edda - Germanic Myths of the Gods (Walter Hansen, ed.) / Book

The Edda - The Germanic Myths and Gods

The texts of the Edda are the source material for almost all surviving Germanic myths. Without the Prose and Poetic Eddas, published in this volume, we would know virtually nothing about the Germanic pantheon, about Odin and Thor, Loki and the sun god Baldur, whom he murdered, about Fenrir the wolf and the Midgard Serpent. We would know nothing about the gods' fortress Asgard or the dark realm of the dead, Hel, nothing of the adventures and battles between the Aesir and the giants, nothing of Ragnarök, the twilight of the gods.
The texts published here are based on the original texts of Simrock's translation. Terms are explained in detail by the editor in marginal notes, and actions are made understandable for the reader in many places.

The editor, Walter Hansen (born 1934), a freelance writer since 1970, is considered a long-standing expert on Germanic mythology. Among his many other works, his books on the Nibelungenlied and Asgard: A Journey of Discovery into the Germanic Pantheon stand out. His biography of Richard Wagner garnered considerable attention. His books have received numerous awards and have been translated into many languages.
