Dragon - treasure box, round, dragon sitting on a bronze-colored sphere

The dragon appears in many cultures and, with its magic and power, is considered one of the most potent power animals.

In many fairy tales, sagas, and legends, it is the quintessential mythical creature.

On one hand, the dragon is a benevolent protector and bringer of good luck; on the other hand, it is seen as the cruel, fire-breathing monster and beast that must be defeated.

The dragon in the world of myths and legends
Western dragons differ significantly from their eastern counterparts. Legends from European countries portray dragons as giant, winged, fire-breathing creatures that are usually feared by humans. Many stories, myths, and legends tell of men who fight dragons, overcome them, and then gain access to the riches hidden in the dragon's lair! The epic hero Beowulf is just one example of someone who tried to fight a dragon guarding treasure—Beowulf lost the battle and was killed. The defining characteristic of a western dragon symbol is that it represents the epitome of "power."

As the guardian and ruler of the 4 elements—fire, water, air, and earth—the dragon is the expression of the forces of nature. Its power is not meant to be directed against its human soul partner, but rather to help them reorganize, sort out, and overcome inner unrest and chaos. It is said to give its soul partner energy and drive, as well as the courage to keep going, even when things often seem hopeless.

The soul partnership with the dragon helps one learn to understand nature and the connections between the elements of fire, water, air, and earth to which we are linked.

Let us be surrounded by these natural forces—with all their power.

As a power animal, the dragon brings us the energy and drive that flows through our lives. The dragon fuels our imagination while also allowing us to stand firmly on the ground and in reality.

Marked by strength and balance, the dragon embodies a bringer of good luck—but also, at the same time, a defensive power animal that can also be destructive with the energy of the four elements.
