A Feast for Odin - Board Game / Party Game
"A Feast for Odin"
is a saga in the form of a board game. You reenact the cultural achievements, trading voyages, and raids of those clan groups we now call "Vikings"—a term that was used differently by the people of the late first millennium.
The ancestors of today's Scandinavians were not only pirates, but also explorers and founders of states. Leif Eriksson is considered the first European in America, long before Columbus. The fact that people at that time developed into great seafarers is fundamentally rooted in the harsh agricultural conditions. Crop failures easily led to hardship. In this game, you can plunder and discover new habitats. You also recreate daily life. You accumulate goods to achieve a social position that provides you with material security.
The one among you whose possessions are worth the most at the end wins the game.
Author's note:
Although there were significant differences in law, religion, and society across the various Scandinavian countries, I have sometimes simplified these for the sake of readability and to avoid creating a dry academic text. There was never such a thing as a universal Viking culture. The primary sources for the Viking Age are runic inscriptions, archaeology, and contemporary literature. The latter was written by Arab travelers and Germanic chroniclers such as Adam of Bremen. Due to the scarcity of sources, much information comes from Iceland and the Icelandic sagas. Because of the game's thematic focus, sources relating to the Norwegian Vikings were given preference.
Lacking these sources, general sources from Scandinavia or even the Early Middle Ages in Northern and Central Europe were consulted. The texts were compiled by me to the best of my knowledge and belief, primarily from internet-based research.
Special thanks to Dr. Reinhard Hennig, probably the most profound expert on the subject, to whom Viking Age research owes a great deal.
