The print of the Valkyries is modeled after a jewelry pendant found in Birka dating back to the 10th century.
Valkyria is the Old Norse word for Valkyrie. Wal stands for "heap of the slain" and kyria stands for "chooser". The warrior women are both Odin's helpers and his daughters. They fulfill the wishes of the Father of the Slain, choose the warriors who fell in battle, and bring them to him. The Valkyries can also intervene in battles and determine fate. The function of the Valkyries is therefore similar to that of the three Norns. It is assumed that the youngest Norn, Skuld, was also a Valkyrie.
The warrior women, like the Einherjar, live in Valhalla. Their residence in Valhalla is Wingolf, the hall of friendship.
