The razor-sharp blade has a Damascus steel core encased in high-carbon steel. The scabbard is finished with leather and metal fittings. The sword's hilt features leather inlays and stainless steel rings. The original of this reconstruction was discovered in 1976 near the village of Gilling in North Yorkshire, on the banks of a river. The original blade is on display at the Yorkshire Museum in York. The sword is believed to date from the 9th or 10th century, a period when England was frequently subjected to Viking raids. This type of blade construction (folded core and high-carbon steel) was already in use by the Anglo-Saxons.
