Norse Myths and History Gesta Danorum
Saxo Grammaticus (c. 1150–1220) presents a fascinating and mysterious panorama of his time. Through him, the reader learns more about our pagan ancestors than from the legendary songs and heroic lays of the Edda. No one has shared as many details about prehistory, the early Middle Ages, the legendary events in northern and central Europe, and peculiar kings and states as he did. What he knew has inspired generations of scholars to the most adventurous speculations, legends, and myths about our ancestors. The revised modern translation presented here is an edition expanded with explanations and numerous annotations. It presents the translated Saxo text in its entirety and without omissions, in the order of the Latin original, enhanced by commentary and connecting transitions.
