The heart symbol serves to recreate the life pulsar, and the Hagal rune (Younger Futhark) symbolizes hail and snow at first, and in a deeper sense, according to the existential fundamental law, that the event patterns of the past have a formative effect on the present (in the image of the all-devastating hail, which, after melting, reveals the refreshed green land). Thus, Hagal symbolizes the energies that originated in the past and continue to act into the present.

In ancient times, the solstice ceremony was carried out as follows: During a certain (regionally varying) period before the winter solstice on December 21st, the candle stub from the previous year (which had to be kept in a special vessel throughout the year) is placed inside the candle holder. The sun, which has not yet turned, is symbolized by the light projection of the heart and rune in the room. The light must never go out during this time. On the night of December 21st, the burning candle is placed on top of the candle holder - the sun has turned, or as the saying goes, has gone over itself. The candle then remains on the holder for a varying amount of time (also depending on the region), in the Alpine region usually until after the Raunächte (January 6th). The stub of the last candle remains in that special place to light the way for the next solstice.

Its shape symbolizes the midnight mountain. Due to the migration period, the custom arose from East Frisia to far into Scandinavia of placing a small light under the candle holder as a symbol of the departing year. At the solstice, at the time of the returning light, a candle is lit on the holder as a symbol of the victory of light over darkness, but also as a symbol of the eternal cycle of becoming and passing away.
