Yule lantern / tower lantern / traditional lantern - dark brown (almost black) ceramic
Yule lantern / traditional lantern, made from dark brown (almost black) natural clay.
The heart symbol serves to emulate the pulse of life. The Hagall rune (Younger Futhark) symbolizes hail and snow, and in a deeper sense (according to the existential fundamental law), represents the way past patterns of events shape the present (in the imagery of all-devastating hail, which, after melting, reveals the green land refreshed).
Thus, Hagall symbolizes the energies that originated in the past and continue to act upon the present.
In ancient times, the solstice ceremony was carried out as follows: during a certain period (varying in length by region) before the winter solstice on December 21st, the candle stub from the previous year (which had to be kept in a special container throughout the year) is placed inside the lantern. The sun, which has not yet turned, is symbolized in the room by the light projected through the heart and rune. The light must never go out. On the night of December 21st, the burning candle is placed on top of the lantern – the sun has turned, or as they say in common parlance, has "gone over itself." The candle then remains on the lantern for a duration that also varies by region, in the Alpine region usually until after the Rauhnächte (January 6th). The stub of the last candle remains in that special place to light the way for the next solstice.
Its form symbolizes the Midnight Mountain. Through the migration period, the custom arose from East Frisia to far into Scandinavia of placing a small light under the lantern as a symbol of the passing year. At the solstice – at the time of the returning light – a candle is lit on top of the lantern as a symbol for the victory of light over darkness, as well as for the eternal cycle of becoming and passing away.
The Yule lantern is new and was crafted according to authentic templates from natural, dark brown (almost black) clay.
