Lewis Mini Chess Set Board Game with Lewis Chess Pieces
Hand-cast museum replica figures made of polyresin (artificial stone) with an antique finish.
Replica of the Lewis chess pieces. The original chess pieces were found in 1831 on the Scottish "Isle of Lewis" and consist of a total of 78 chess pieces. Hence the name. At the end of the 12th century, the island belonged to Norway. The figures were likely created in Norway in 1150 and were made from ivory, walrus tusks, and whale teeth. Due to the active Viking trade, the game of chess was brought to Europe at an early stage. It is assumed that a Norwegian merchant hid the figures on the island. The majority of the original pieces are exhibited in the British Museum.
