Jewelry - "Sun" pendant on lava stone

The "magical" (black) sun is first concretely attested in the Akkadian-Old Babylonian sphere (Sargon I, Naram-Sin). Known as BAB-CHOME, the invisible "dark sun" is considered the earthly source of power for the supreme deity "ILU," directly connected to the divine power emanating from the afterlife, which can be utilized—in part—by the gods and goddesses, especially Anu, Enlil, Ea, Ishtar, and Marduk. The close relationship between this pantheon and that of the Edda has been demonstrated, although a definitive and secure explanation for this Mesopotamian-Germanic commonality has yet to be found.
One of the best-known and most beautiful depictions of the "Black Sun," placed next to the "Sun of Day," is found on the large Naram Sin Stele in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The myth of the "Black Sun" spread from southern Babylonia to Assyria, Persia, Phoenicia, Carthage, and Egypt. Emperor Frederick II brought an Assyrian amulet with the "Black Sun" to Europe; this is its first tangible appearance in Europe (although this says nothing about the possibility that belief in the "Black Sun" might not have already been prevalent in earlier Germanic times (see Mesopotamian-Germanic commonalities)).

  • A beautiful stone pendant with a sun symbol.
  • Grey lava rock, naturally rounded by the river.
  • Size: approx. 35 x 35 mm
