Siegfried's Dragon Blood Dagger
Siegfried's Dragon Blood Dagger decorative dagger.
Siegfried or Sigurd, the glorious dragon slayer, appears in various songs and stories of European countries and is still considered today to be the shining hero who courageously, bravely, and invincibly goes out into the world to perform great deeds for fame and fortune. His strength matches his physical size. Famous are his sword Gram or Balmung, which was once created by the gods. His horse Grani is a descendant of the eight-legged divine horse Sleipnir. The most well-known story is the overcoming of the dragon Fafnir. By bathing in the blood of the slain wyrm, his skin becomes calloused, so that no weapon can now injure or kill him. He eats the roasted heart of the dragon and subsequently understands the language of the birds, who immediately warn him of his foster father, the greedy master smith Regin. He is only vulnerable in one spot on his back: when he took the bath in the dragon's blood, a linden leaf was stuck to one spot on his back. This spot under his shoulder blade later becomes his undoing, when the spear of the treacherous Hagen pierces him from behind at a water spring (in the Völsunga saga, the sword of Gutthorm).
