Trilobite on matrix, fossilized specimen
Trilobites (from the Greek for "three-lobed") were segmented animals that existed in the primordial oceans of planet Earth from the Cambrian period until the end of the Permian, approximately 250 million years ago.
They possessed a calcitic exoskeleton (especially the spine). They went extinct before the dinosaurs conquered the Earth and are now index fossils for the Paleozoic era.
Trilobites were among the first arthropods, a phylum of hard-shelled creatures with a segmented body structure and many coordinated legs (which, along with the animals' antennae, have unfortunately almost never been preserved as fossils due to their composition). They form the extinct class Trilobita, currently consisting of nine recognized orders—over 150 families, more than 5,000 genera, and over 15,000 described species. New species are discovered and identified every year. Their diversity makes trilobites the most divergent group among all extinct organisms. Joachim Barrande made significant contributions to their early research.
