Vegvísir - Signpost - partially gold-plated stainless steel ring
The Vegvísir is a mystical, magical symbol that was presumably intended to be a "guide through life" - or represents one!
There are various theories regarding the meaning and structure of the symbol.
The symbol is known from the Huld Manuscript dating to around 1880. Any association with the Vikings is controversial and has not yet been proven.
The center of the eight-spoked symbol, which resembles a Hagal rune, represents the "self."
It is suggested, among other things, that in Norse mythology it could represent the 9 worlds:
- The Upper World: Asgard - Vanaheim - Ljösalfheim
- The Middle World: Muspelheim - Midgard - Niflheim
- The Lower World: Svartalfheim - Jötunheim - Hel
The Huld Manuscript was written hundreds of years after the end of the Viking Age.
It states in the manuscripts: "If this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even if the path is unknown.”
The word "Vegvísir" comes from the Icelandic language and means signpost!
We do not find a clear source for the origin of the symbol in the Huld manuscripts, nor any classification to the early Middle Ages (or possibly an even earlier time).
Likewise, it is not clearly known whether it was used for navigation on ships, for example.
We therefore consciously remain cautious here, as no verifiable evidence has yet been provided.
However, the magical aura, power, and strength of the symbol can hardly be disputed!
