Vegvísir - Pathfinder - partially gold-plated stainless steel ring
The Vegvísir is a mystical, magical symbol that was presumably intended to be a "guide through life" - or represents one!
There are various theories regarding the meaning and structure of the symbol.
The symbol is known from the Huld Manuscript dating to around 1880. An association with the Vikings is controversial and has not yet been proven.
The center point of the eight-spoke symbol, which resembles a Hagal rune, represents the "self."
It is suggested, among other things, that it could represent the 9 worlds of Norse mythology:
- The Upper World: Asgard - Vanaheim - Ljosalfheim
- The Middle World: Muspelheim - Midgard - Niflheim
- The Lower World: Svartalfheim - Jötunheim - Hel
The Huld Manuscript was written hundreds of years after the end of the Viking Age.
The manuscripts state: "If this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known."
The word "Vegvísir" comes from the Icelandic language and means pathfinder!
We do not find a clear source for the origin of the symbol in the Huld Manuscripts, nor is there any association with the early Middle Ages (or possibly an even earlier period).
It is also not clearly known whether it was used for navigation on ships, for example.
We are therefore intentionally reserved here, as no verifiable evidence has been provided to date.
The magical aura, power, and strength of the symbol are, however, hard to dispute!
