A Valkyrie, also known as a battle maiden or shield maiden, is part of the retinue of the Allfather Odin (Wotan). The Valkyries escorted the Einherjar from the battlefield to Valhalla to the Allfather, the god of war and death, Wotan (Odin).
The Valkyrie waits at a distance on the edge of the battlefield to escort the fallen heroes to Valhalla. Only those who find death on the battlefield are chosen by the Valkyries. Everyone else is awaited after death in the underworld by the goddess Hel.
Valkyria is the Old Norse word for Valkyrie. "Val" stands for "heap of the slain" and "kyria" stands for "chooser". These warrior women are both Odin's helpers and his daughters. They fulfill the wishes of the Allfather, choose the warriors who have fallen in battle, and bring them to him. The Valkyries can also intervene in battles and determine fate. The role of the Valkyries is therefore similar to that of the three Norns. It is believed that the youngest Norn, Skuld, was also a Valkyrie.
The warrior women live in Valhalla just like the Einherjar. Their residence in Valhalla is Wingolf, the Hall of Friendship.
The Vikings saw the Northern Lights as a sign of the Valkyries' presence on Earth. They believed that a great battle was being fought somewhere on Earth. The moon reflected the golden armor of the Valkyries as they rode across the battlefield to choose the Einherjar. This is what conjured the Northern Lights into the sky.
